Marwa Abdelghani works at the Muslim Public Affairs Council as the Community Outreach Fellow. She is currently pursuing a bachelor's degree in Literary Journalism at the University of California, Irvine.
Abdelghani writes extensively on issues such as women's rights, politics in the U.S. and the Middle East, Islam, interfaith, Muslims in the media, as well as life and love. She has been published on publications such as Elite Daily, Coming of Faith, OnFaith, FaithStreet, AltMuslimah, Patheos, and Jewish Journal. She has a passion for expressing herself and her concerns through writing, which she believes is one of the most powerful ways to create change.
Abdelghani also does a lot of public speaking. She has spoken about Islam and Muslims in America, the network of Islamophobia in America, nonviolent resistance, the need for the Muslim voice in America, and women's rights. She has spoken at high schools, college campuses, churches and synagogues, as well as several mosques. She was also featured on several news networks speaking on these issues, such as NPR, CNN, FOX11, NBC4, KTLA5, and KCAL9.
Young people are the demographic that Abdelghani enjoys working with the most. Although she works extensively with the adult community, as a 22-year old, she considers herself a part of the youth. Abdelghani previously coordinated the Muslim Youth Group of the Islamic Center of Southern California. She is now an ongoing mentor for the kids. She also worked as a facilitator of the Muslim Gamechangers Network of the Council on American-Islamic Relations, where she trained high school Muslims on social justice issues. What excites her the most is when she is preparing for an upcoming talk that she will be giving to a youth group!
As a strong advocate for women's rights, Abdelghani sits on the board of Coming of Faith, a publication that elevates the voices of minority women and their stories. She is also a weekly columnist for the site. Check out her stories on Coming of Faith. She is also a strong believer of interfaith work, and currently sits on the the advisory board of NewGround: A Muslim-Jewish Partnership for Change.
In her free time, Abdelghani loves to sing and read.
