Haris was born in Kabul, Afghanistan in 1978. He was raised and educated in Southern California. Haris attended California State University of Northridge, where he received a Bachelors Degree in Education with a minor in Chicano Studies. He has worked as a teacher at the New Horizon School, Pasadena for 5 years, teaching Islamic Studies and Quran. Haris is currently pursing a Masters Degree in Public Policy and Administration.

Haris has been active in the Muslim community for the past 10 years. He has directed the Youth Division of the Muslim American Society in the San Fernando Valley and has worked as a youth counselor and facilitator at many camps, conferences and programs. Haris has spoken at various national conferences on the topic of Islam and the role of the Muslim American community. Haris was a first responder to the disaster zone in Hurricane Katrina for Islamic Relief an organization that Haris has volunteered with for the past 10 years. Haris is married to Ghada Khan, a geneticist by profession, and they have two children Hanan 6 and Rayyan 4. Haris loves to read and play basketball. His two preferred books are The Early Hours by Khurram Murad and Bill Clinton's My Life.
